CHILD HEALTH
One of the best barriers between your skin and the sun is clothing, so try to cover as much skin as possible.
What to look for when choosing sun protective clothing
Not all clothing fabric is equal. Consider:
- Fabric structure: If you can easily see through the fabric, chances are UV can easily pass through it. The tighter the fabric structure, the better the sun protection. Tightly woven, lightweight natural fabrics such as linen, cotton or hemp will also help keep you cooler than synthetic fiber equivalents.
- Tension: If a fabric is stretched, it will be less protective. This is common in knitted or elasticized fabrics.
- Layering: Layering of fabrics and garments is an effective way of increasing protection from UV.
- Colour: Darker colours absorb UV rays better than white or pastel colours of the same fabric.
- Moisture content: Fabrics offer less protection from UV radiation when wet. How much less protection will depend on the type of fabric and the amount of moisture it absorbs. To reduce the effect of the moisture, take dry clothes to change into or if dipping in and out of the water, choose a fabric that provides effective protection from UV and that will dry quickly.
- Caring for your clothes: Washing new clothes can improve their sun protectiveness by shrinking gaps in the structure. However, old, threadbare or faded clothes may offer decreased protection over time.
- UV absorbers: Some clothing is treated so it can absorb more UV radiation. Check the clothing label to see if your clothes have been treated and follow the care instructions.

NEWS FROM OUR NUTRITIONIST
Following on from last month regarding our new 6 week menu trial and changes made, the children have enjoyed the new lunch and afternoon tea. The feedback has been great from the children. Are giving everything a try and the feedback has made menu planning a breeze. I will be making a Christmas lunch for the children on December 22nd to celebrate the end of the year together.

CATERPILLAR ROOM
We have welcomed many new families in the past month and all the children have settled in well with their primary carer. It’s been a delight to care for and guide all the children through some key milestones such as learning to sit, crawl, walk and their first words. As you may know, Carissa will be taking maternity leave from December. We wish her and Michael all the very best as they start a new chapter in their lives. We would like to welcome Ally to the under 2s room The under 2’s have been focussing on nutrition. The educators are encouraging the children to make their own choices, self-serve and encouraging healthy food which promotes hand-eye coordination and further develops their cognitive skills. Hot Weather: As the hot weather is now upon us, we would like to remind parents to dress their children in sun smart clothing and to please pack a hat for outside play times.
Outcome 3: Children have a strong sense of wellbeing – Children take increasing responsibility for their own health and physical wellbeing

COCOON ROOM
We would like to welcome all of our new children and families to our room. It has been a privilege to get to know your children and assist in expanding their knowledge. This month, we have been focusing on Christmas. The children have been decorating the room with their ideas and creative Christmas art work. The children have asked on numerous occasions to listen to Christmas music and we have done so while singing and dancing along. The children have had fun decorating our Christmas tree for our room with tinsel and ball-balls. On the 24th of this month, we had our Angaston Christmas Parade. The children enjoyed seeing all the staff at the parade and walking with them while dressed in their Christmas best. Music with Jeff is always a bit hit. The children really love listening to different instruments and music and moving to the beat. As a group, we have been looking at Owl’s and using a range of media; have researched Australian Owls and the sounds they make. With our new friends, we have been focusing on Self-Help Skills. The children are encouraged to wash their own hands, set up at meal times, serve their own meals and clean up from meal times.
Outcome 2: Children are connected and contribute to their world – Children develop a sense of belonging to groups and communities and an understanding of the reciprocal rights and responsibilities necessary for active community participation

PRESCHOOL
This month we have been focusing a lot around the word ‘Identity’ and have been explaining the elements of music and movement. We have spent this term brainstorming what is meant by the word ‘Movement’ and have developed learning experiences to help us understand the in more detail. We have explored movement throughout ‘The Arts’ curriculum (Music, Drama, Visual Arts, Media and Art & Dance). The children have learnt how to express their ideas through all of the 5 elements of art. We have created yet another Reggio Emilia Project which linked up really well to our last project. The children investigated the word ‘Identity’ which in turn, changed their mindset of thinking to how we all look and our unique characteristics. Through learning experiences that supported the Reggio Emilia approach, the children’s thinking helped them gather a greater sense of self-identity.
Outcome 1: Children have a strong sense of identity – Children develop knowledgeable and confident self-identities

OUR COMMUNITY
We are continuing to build strong community bonds with the wider community as we look to continue providing high quality care and a sense of belonging. We would like to say a big thank-you to the Good Shephard Primary School for allowing us to use the HUB facility. Also our physical education visits and the library visits which the children love. We are also grateful for our connection with the Angaston Primary School and the Angaston Kindy for their ongoing support
