CHILD HEALTH
Driveway Safety
Did you know that approximately seven children aged 15 years and under, are killed each year and 60 are seriously injured, on average, due to being hit by a vehicle moving around the home?
The vast majority of these tragedies involved children under five. Most of the accidents involved a reversing vehicle. To compound the tragedy, it was generally a family member at the wheel.
Not all accidents in driveways happen with the vehicle reversing.
Children are surprisingly quick and mobile. Their small size coupled with the large blind spots behind most cars, means that children stepping or standing behind the vehicle often cannot be seen from the driver’s seat. Even if a car is fitted with parking sensors or a reversing camera, children may not be noticed until it is too late to stop.

CATERPILLAR ROOM
Firstly, we would like to welcome our new families into the caterpillar room. We look forward to a great start to your child’s childcare experiences and are available to assist with their transitions in any way we can.
Over the past few weeks, we have been focusing on bringing the natural outdoors; inside. Pop into our room and have a look at the wonderful changes we have made.
We are also introducing music into our program daily. The children enjoy singing and dancing which connects to our curriculum of enhancing the children’s language and social skills.
For the month of May, we will be focusing on self-identities. It is important for children of all ages to be able to recognise themselves amongst others. We will be creating an “Identity Wall” to which the children; as they arrive; will be able to identify their own picture amongst their peers pictures and place their picture onto the “Who is here today” section.
Another way we will be assisting with self-identification, is having the children stand in front of the mirror with an educator, ask the child/ren who they can see in the mirror and have the children practice saying their own names.
Outcome 2: Children are connected and contribute to their world – Children develop a sense of belonging to groups and communities and an understanding of the reciprocal rights and responsibilities necessary for active community participation
Outcome 1: Children have a strong sense of identity – Children develop knowledgeable and confident self-identities

COCOON ROOM
The toddlers enjoyed some holiday fun with the babies over the past two weeks. We worked on transitions by working with the babies to build relationships and sharing special moments.
We enjoyed many outdoor activities and particularly enjoyed the musical fence in the baby yard. The children sang and danced as they hit the various metal kitchen items to make music.
Educators assisted children in creating their own felt boards. They drew pictures on the felt and an educator cut them out for the children to stick on the felt boards.
Our pumpkins are still growing amazingly and we really enjoy eating our fresh produce. Our garden is ready to be trimmed, harvested and removed ready for our next crop. We will be working towards that this month and having discussions on what the children would like to grow this time. We would love any suggestions you may have, of things we could grow in our garden.
During the school holidays, the cocoons and the Pre School went on an excursion to Yalumba for the Harvest Festival. All of the children were very well behaved and had a great time. It was very special to see many of our past and present families at the festival. The Harvest Festival was a wonderful experience had by all.
Outcome 2: Children are connected with and contribute to their world – Children develop a sense of belonging to groups and communities and an understanding of reciprocal rights and responsibilities nessecary for active community participation.

PRESCHOOL
Welcome to term 2!
Before and during the holidays, we have been focusing on the life cycle of chickens. We have an incubator in our room with fertile eggs that we are observing, monitoring and waiting for them to hatch. The children have also made their own chickens out of paper plates, pieces of paper, feathers and crayons. We discussed how the chickens grow inside the egg, what they need to grow, how do they break out of the egg and what do they look like.
This month, we are focusing on Literacy. The children have been practicing writing their names, identifying their names and letter recognition. Some of the activities we have already completed are Secret Messages – Writing letters on a white piece of paper with a white crayon and revealing them with watered down paint, Say it; Make it; Write it (Name Recognition) and how many letters are in our names. The children have enjoyed focusing in their names and expanding on their knowledge.
Outcome 2: Children are connected and contribute to their world – Children respond to diversity with respect
Outcome 4: Children are confident and involved learners – Children develop dispositions for learning such as curiosity, cooperation, confidence, creativity, commitment, enthusiasm, persistence, imagination and reflexivity
