Angaston CHILD CARE & EARLY LEARNING CENTRE

NEWSLETTER                                                                                December 2017

I would like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year from myself and Educators.

Fundraiser:

The sausage sizzle fundraiser at Miter 10 was a success. Thank you to all the families who came down to support our centre and buy a sausage. This is what we were fundraising for I think the children will love it.

RAFFLE:

Our wonderful Christmas Raffle was won by Mel Nuske. Congratulations and we hope you enjoy all the goodies.

Quality Improvement Plan:

As you may be aware we are working through our Quality Areas and value our parent feedback. This helps us to improve our service and the care we provide.

Is your child up to date with immunisation?

Remember that children who are not immunised will be excluded during any outbreak of a government scheduled preventable illness within the centre

CHILD HEALTH

Sunscreen should be the last line of defense after clothing, a hat, shade and sunglasses. During sun protection times, apply SPF30 (or higher) broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen to any skin not covered by clothing.

Understanding the label

The sun protection factor (SPF) is a measure of protection sunscreen gives against UVB radiation. In lab conditions, SPF30 filters 96.7% of UVB and SPF50 filters 98%. Both can provide excellent protection if they are applied properly.

Broad-spectrum means that sunscreen offers protection from UVA rays, as well as UVB. Check and follow the ‘use by’ date stated on the packaging and store sunscreen below 30°C.

DATES TO REMEMBER

School Holidays                             18th Dec – 26th Jan

Centre Closed                                   25th Dec – 1st Jan

Term 1 of 2018 Starts                               29th January

How to apply sunscreen

Use a generous amount of sunscreen. The average-sized adult needs a teaspoon of sunscreen for their head and neck, each limb and for the front and the back of the body. That is about 35ml of sunscreen for one full body application. Apply sunscreen 20 minutes before you go outside.

(whether or not the label tells you to do this). Remember to reapply after swimming or excessive sweating. If you have an allergic reaction to a sunscreen, try another brand or look for a fragrance-free product such as a toddler or sensitive sunscreen. A doctor or chemist could also offer advice about choosing another product.

Sunscreen and nanoparticles

Nanotechnology has been used in sunscreens for many years. To date, the Cancer Council’s assessment, drawing on the best available evidence, is that Nano particulates used in sunscreens do not pose a risk. We continue to monitor research on this topic. Sunscreen has been scientifically proven to reduce the risk of melanoma and other skin cancers.

INFANTS ROOM:

As 2017 draws to a close, we would like to take the opportunity to pass on our best wishes to all families. We wish you a very Merry Christmas and all the best for 2018. As most of you may know, Carissa is now on maternity leave. The countdown is now on for her due date; 4 weeks to be exact. Ally will be working alongside Suzy and Jess. Ally has been working at the centre for over 2 years as a casual relief educator. Please pop into our room and say hi. This month the under 2’s have been focusing on Math, counting their steps, counting how many steps it takes to climb up onto the change mat and measuring water, sand and flour. We have also been creating Christmas crafts and the children look forward to sharing their Christmas crafts with their families.

Suzy, Ally & Jess

COCOON ROOM:

This month in the Toddler room is all about Christmas!! The children are extremely excited about ‘Santa’ coming to town and celebrating this wonderful holiday. The children have been asking for Christmas songs; so we have been singing and dancing along to Christmas carols and having great fun. At each group time, we have many conversations about Christmas and reading Christmas stories. The children have decorated the room with their wonderful artwork and are excited to do some more. We would like to wish all our amazing families a Merry Christmas and a safe and happy New Year.

Andrea & Nikita

PRESCHOOL:

This month we are continuing our focus on movement, identity and how our bodies move. We have been doing work with mazes, Spirograph’s, dancing and yoga. We have also been doing a lot for Christmas, making our Reggio Emilia inspired Christmas tree and decorating it, making Christmas presents and Christmas Art. This month we will also be starting our holiday program full of Christmas arts and crafts, games like the reindeer boot camp and Christmas tree balancing to promote gross motor skills. The children have loved our weekly visits to Good Shepherd Primary School for PE and Library days. We will miss this over the holidays but will be starting to do this again when the school year starts next year. We hope that all the families have a safe and fantastic Christmas and New Year.

Emma & Kristy

Facebook:

Have you seen our Facebook page? We upload what the children are doing each day. We have had great feedback from families as they get to see what their children are doing throughout the day whilst they are at work. Look us up and like us on Facebook at: Angaston Childcare & Early Learning Centre.

OUR COMMUNITY:

We are continuing to build strong community bonds with the wider community as we look to continue providing high quality care and a sense of belonging. We would like to say a big thank-you to the Good Shepherd Primary School for allowing us to use the HUB facility. Also our physical education visits and the library visits which the children love. We are also grateful for our connection with the Angaston Primary School and the Angaston Kindy for their ongoing support
